Backstory

Renée and Brian Mendoza Haran have been players in the NC DIY and Indie music scenes since the late 1990s/early 2000s, respectively. Alongside childhood best friend Alex Chesney, Renée co-founded Ashrae Fax and went on to form Filthybird and Ama Divers with Brian. Following a weird trail of notes from New York to North Carolina in 2004, Brian hails from NYC’s rich experimental/avant-garde and Indie music scene, where he got to perform in ensembles led by LaMonte Young and Glenn Branca. He also has 25 years of professional recording and luthier/electronics experience, and building/repairing guitars for all kinds of amazing folks at 30th St. and Roscoe Guitar Shops. Paired with Renée’s 15 years of experience in education and digital content strategy in tech, as well as her work in Girls Rock NC circles, the two make the perfect combo for providing Greensboro and surrounding areas with unique, community-driven STEAM programming. Their goal is to leverage innovative service models, such as sliding scales and subscriptions, to make creative spacetime more accessible for marginalized folks while leaning into the way music and art are created today—from bedrooms, on cellphones, around the clock—everywhere.
